    Overview

    The Forensic Psychologist Fellowship Co-Director performs court ordered evaluations, commitment and recommitment evaluations pursuant to the provisions of M.G.L. c. 123. He/she evaluates individuals with suspected mental health difficulties around issues of competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, aid-in-sentencing, and civil commitment related to mental illness. He/she testifies in court as needed and provides violence risk assessments and consultations to the hospital. The role of the Fellowship Co-Director is to assist the Fellowship Director in providing bi-weekly training activities and supervision to postdoctoral fellows, including all direct and indirect forensic clinical activities.

    Qualifications

    Education:

    • Ph.D. or Psy. D. in psychology from an accredited university.

    Experience:

    • 3 years of experience working in a psychiatric hospital or correctional facility is preferred.

    Licenses/Certifications:

    • Current license or license eligible as a Psychologist in Massachusetts.  Designated Forensic Psychologist (DFP) or DFP candidate.

    Responsibilities

    1. Performs court ordered evaluations, commitment and recommitment evaluations pursuant to the provisions of M.G.L. c. 123.
    2. Conducts inpatient examinations of defendants with suspected mental health difficulties often around issues of competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, aid-in-sentencing, and civil commitment related to mental illness.
    3. Coordinates with inpatient treatment teams and the courts, and provides consultation to the hospital as needed.
    4. Completes other forensic evaluations that include competence to stand trial updates, general violence risk assessments, and sexual violence risk assessments.
    5. Provides expert testimony to the court.
    6. Assigns forensic postdoctoral fellows cases on a rotating basis under the supervision of the Fellowship Director.
    7. Participates in the development and implementation of the forensic didactic series and mock trial exercises.
    8. Facilitates yearly recruitment and interviewing of forensic postdoctoral applicants.
    9. Completes thorough, accurate, and timely documentation of evaluations that are consistent with professional standards and hospital procedures.
    10. Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized assessment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span development needs of each patient. Demonstrates age specific competency in all aspects of duties performed. 
    11. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
    12. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
    13. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
    14. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
    15. Perform other duties as assigned.
