Overview

Our Recreational Therapist develops, organizes, and implements therapeutic recreation groups and activities that address the needs of patients with mental illness. Responsible for an array of daily interventions including groups, individual activities, and support activities for patients on and off the living units. Works in conjunction with the interdisciplinary treatment teams to achieve measurable objectives specified in the treatment plan.

Qualifications

Education for Recreation Specialist:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in therapeutic recreation or related field.

Experience for Recreation Specialist:

  • Two (2) years of experiences as a recreation therapist is preferred.

Licenses/Certification for Recreation Specialist:

  • None required.

Responsibilities

  1. Plans and conducts daily recreation and recovery groups, manages group process/dynamics to maximize patient participation and positive objective outcomes. Implements individualized activity plans and Recovery Treatment Assistant (RTA) mentoring. Maintains creative, stimulating groups and room environment.
  2. For committed patients, completes therapeutic activities assessment and supervises other staff who complete therapeutic activity assessment and services.
  3. Performs timely, complete, accurate, and legible documentation of services if is consistent with professional standards, facility procedures, and department requirements.
  4. Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages. Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitivity to the age and life span developmental needs of each patient.
  5. Completes yearly training.
  6. Is honest, consistent, fair, positive, nurturing in daily interactions. Demonstrates values and philosophy of Role Recovery approach. Demonstrates advocacy for patients. Handles crisis behavior by identifying antecedents, verbal de-escalation and CPI implementation. Effective therapeutic communication- verbal, para-verbal, non-verbal.
  7. Takes initiative to make cooperative efforts with colleagues and other facility staff to meet needs of patients.
  8. Manages time effectively including completion of assigned auxiliary support services and department task assignments.
  9. Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment. Completes yearly training.
  10. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  11. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  12. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  13. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
